When it comes to importing sounds, the Mac version distinguishes between sounds that come from other existing FM programs, and .wav files that come from elsewhere on your computer. (That's the main difference between the Mac version and the PC version, which treats all .wav files equally whether or not they're already in an existing FM program.) Recording original sounds is a fairly similar process to that of the PC version. Below are instructions for getting sounds from all three possible sources on your Mac.
Importing Sounds on the Mac
To import sounds from prexisting FM programs (such as the practice and sample programs, or any other programs you may have made previously):
1. Open the Sounds Room window in the program you're working on. 2. Click the Sound Library icon on the left side of the window (it looks like a little shelf of books). The standard Mac navigation window should appear. 3. Use the drop down menu at the top of the navigation window to get to a folder containing pre-existing programs (such as "manual programs" or "sample programs") 4. Double-click (or click Open for) the folder containing the desired program, and then open the Library folder. A file called Sound.lib should appear. That file contains all the sounds for the program you've chosen. 5. Double-click Sound.lib. The FM Sounds Importer window should appear. This looks similar to the one in the PC version. The available sounds appear on the left. The column on the right holds the sounds you choose to import. *To hear a sound, click a sound name in the left column to highlight it and then click the Play icon in the center of the window. The selected sound should play. *To import a graphic, click the sound name to highlight it and then click the green right arrow in the center of the window. The selected sound name should appear on the right. *To delete a sound from your import list, click the sound name in the right column and click the down arrow in the center of the window. The sound name should be deleted from the Import list. 6. Click Done when you'vefinished selecting graphics from that particular program's library. Your new program's Graphic Library window should appear with the newly imported graphics added to the list. (They'll have the same names as they did in the other program.)
To import a .wav file from elsewhere on your computer:
1. Open the Sound Room in the program you're working on. 2. Click the Import button that appears in the column of buttons on the right of the window. The navigation window should appear. 3. Use the drop-down menu at the top of the navigation window to find the folder containing the desired .wav file(s). 4. Double-click the folder to open it. PLEASE NOTE: The FM Sound Importer will NOT appear. Instead, a list of file names ending in .wav will appear in the top scrolling menu of the navigation box. Unfortunately you can't play the sounds at this point, so you just have to go by the names. 5. Highlight the name of a file that sounds desirable and click the Add button (which takes the place of the Open button at this stage of the importing process). The file name should appear in the scrolling menu underneath the one showing available sound files. 6. Continue adding sounds in this manner until you are done. 7. To remove a sound at any time from your import collection, highlight the sound name in the bottom scrolling menu and click Remove. 8. Click the Done button when you are finished importing .wav files. The Sound Room for the program you're working on should appear. 9. Use the Sound Room window to play, rename, and/or delete graphics you've just imported, as necessary.
To record your own original sounds in the FM Sound Room: 1. Open the sound room for the program you're working on. 2. Click the New button. A generic new sound name (e.g. "sound#1) should appear highlighted both in the sound name box and in the scrolling sound list below. 3. Type a descriptive name for your new sound. (You can do this after recording if you wish.) 4. Click Record. A Mac recording panel should appear. 5. When you're ready, click the Record button and begin tooting your horn (or whatever). The little speaker graphic should show sound waves and the timer should register the length of your sound. 6. Click the Stop button when you are finished recording. 7. Click the Play button to hear your recorded sound. 8. Click the Save button if you are satisfied with the sound. (If not, repeat steps 5-7.) The recording box should close. You can rename or play your new sound in the FM Sound Room as necessary.
